English/Language Arts

Study Skills

Art

With a focus on the Washington State Common Core State Standards, all math learning will be aligned with the local schools. Learning gaps will be identified during the initial meeting with the student and family so that all learning will be meaningful and targeted to what will make the most impact.

Reading and writing will be aligned with CCSS as well. Reading and writing with be taught through the process of a research project of high interest to the student. Through research and the organization of a project, learning will be authentic and meaningful.

Students that have the Skills of Successful Learners have greater self confidence and higher levels of academic success. Study Skills learning will focus on strategies that can be applied right away so that it can be practiced during Summer School.

When learning Science the focus is on investigation, problem solving, and interpreting results. These skills benefit students in all areas of learning. Science is often a favorite subject and gets kids excited about conducting research. Presenting results is a great way to get hesitant writers to practice handwriting and spelling through preparing a Power Point, or research paper.

The arts offer students a way to connect with feelings and are a great way to express emotions. Fine motor skills are a key skill for young kids to develop and unfortunately with so much time spent on technology many students may lack these foundational skills. During Summer School we will connect Art projects to other learning in Reading, Writing, Math, and Science.
