Each new school year brings a new beginning... a new teacher, new friends, and a new outlook on learning. Some years things fall into place with the perfect teacher, the perfect friend group, and the perfect home routine. What makes the beginning to a new school year a successful one? I have put together some tips to help you ease into the 2025-2026 school year.
>Set a routine for bedtime. Sleep is a key indicator of success in school. Without enough sleep students are grumpy, irritable, can't focus, and are unable to be in the Ready to Learn zone.
>Decide on a homework routine. Setting a plan for completing homework will establish it as a non-negotiable for your child. Keep it stress-free by setting a time limit and communicate with your child's teacher if homework is taking longer than the expected amount of time.
>Read for joy. Reading for struggling readers can be uncomfortable and undesired when there is any pressure for performance. New readers benefit from reading the pictures, or retelling a familiar story.
>Play family games. Playing Board Games is a great way to practice turn taking, and practice math and reading in a fun and relaxed way.
The key to a great start to a new school year is to minimize the potential for stress by establishing these routines upfront that incorporate homework and learning. Not every day will be perfect, but having plan will help when you get off track.
Your child's teacher is a great resource when it comes to fun ways to practice learning at home, a homework routine, and they are a great partner when you get stuck solving homework problems. A tutor is another great resource for building a plan for keeping up with learning. Send me a message if you would like help establishing a sustainable homework routine.
